The biggest medieval priory in Ireland is a testament to the achievements of the Augustinians who built it. Covering nearly four acres next to the River Suir, it was founded by William Fitz-Aldhelm de Burgho in the 12th century. The monastery was dissolved in 1500. Today, it’s a very large ruin in a field, an unexpected wonderland of broken walls, ancient tombs, empty rooms and spiral staircases. Athassel Abbey is open to the public.
