Askeaton Friary is a riverside ruin where two Irish martyrs are buried. Deep inside is one of the finest cloisters in Ireland, its long cascades of limestone arches a wonderful sight. Other attractions include excellent window tracery and a carving of St Francis in the chapter room, where the Irish Martyrs, Partick O’Healy and Conn O’Rourke, are buried. The Abbey was founded in about 1400 by Gerald "The Poet", fourth Earl of Desmond. The Friary has recently been restored.
