Ardmore, derived from Árd Mór, means great height, and these ruins offer spectacular views over the beautiful Ardmore Bay. One of Ireland’s oldest ecclesiastical sites, this is where St Declan built a monastery in the fifth century. The ruined cathedral and round tower seen today were built in the 12th century. Highlights include Romanasque arcades and sculptures, two Ogham stones, one with the longest Ogham inscription in Ireland, and in the graveyard, St Declan’s Oratory, where it’s believed the Saint is buried.
