Áras an Uachtaráin has been the official residence of Ireland’s President since 1938. Its history goes back much further though to 1751 when it was built by Nathaniel Clements. In 1782, he sold it for £25,000 to the British Viceroys who lived there until 1922 when the Irish Free State was born. Áras an Uachtaráin, which means Residence of the President, is open on Saturdays when visitors can join a free tour of the lavish State Rooms and find out about the history of the house in the Visitor Centre.
